By Mick Gregory – California-based Tower Energy is going national big time. This is a very big news story, but did you read about it in the major mainstream media? The company this month begins the huge energy deal that will soon have them providing fuel to several thousand 7-Eleven stations, boosting its volumes by nearly 100,000 barrels per day (b/d). It is replacing the Citgo brand of gas at thousands of 7-Eleven stations with ExxonMobil, Valero and others. Tower will take over virtually all of 7- Eleven gas supplies as Citgo is dropped. The private company expects to see sales exceed $3-billion in 2006, and that number could surpass $6 billion next year.
The upside for average Americans is the profit goes to Americans and they reinvest in their communities, rather than billions of dollars going to Hugo Chavez and his friends through Citgo. Huge numbers like these could put Tower in the top 30 of the Forbes list of the largest privately-held U.S. companies. Between now and Sept. 30, Tower will take over the supply for 7-Eleven stations across America including the Northeast, Mid- Atlantic, Midwest, Texas, and Florida. Tower currently supplies Utah and Colorado sites, those two states will get their gasoline from Sinclair and Frontier when new contracts kick in. With the exception of that Rockies, Tower will be the coast-to-coast gasoline provider of about 95,000 b/d for the 7-Eleven chain. The logistics are intimidating but Tower will rely on common carriers such as Kenan and PCT to provide gasoline that Citgo had delivered in the past. Tower will get a large portion of its unbranded gasoline from ExxonMobil, and has also contracted with other large and midsized refiners, including Valero, representatives said.
So now we see why Hugo Chavez is on a whirl-wind tour, signing contracts with the despots of the world for his gas
Most communists skipped business school. The Citgo-PDVSA tankers going to China will take 40 days, as compared to three to four days across the Gulf of Mexico. Chavez will lose $6-$8 a barrel on that deal. Maybe more, because of the empty return trips of the expensive tankers.
I can almost hear a “big gulp” from Chavez and his Marxist friends As the public becomes aware of where Citgo profits are going, they will vote with their gas and convenience store purchases, but more importantly, the large fuel suppliers with business management and research are dropping Citgo by the thousands, making it a very easy for consumers to pass Citgo stations. And the threat that Chavez had of halting America’s gas supplies, spiking retail prices and crushing the US economy begin to fade away. Eventually, PDVSA will have to drop the Citgo brand and only sell on the spot market. We could soon see gas prices easing. Instead of Citgo’s gas traders trying to pump up the price on the open market, they will have to sell their unbranded, sour, heavy crude, lower. How sweet it is! What is that a giant Slurpee sound I hear? Hugo’s Citgo is almost Cit-gone.

Greg, good to know about this source for information about Citgo. I was not aware of the story until I got the email blast from a friend. A good example of how stories not covered by the media can get traction. Thanks for your compliment on my blog and same to you!

“Hola! Hugo Chavez is such a great man. He’s doubling his program of cut rate heating oil to the poor in the U.S. East Coast!”
Next winter, Venezuelan subsidized oil supply for heating of US low-income houses is to increase twofold over the last year, President Hugo Chávez announced Thursday, Efe quoted.
“We will make it. We will double the heating oil program from October and particularly in November, December, January and February,” the head of state, on official visit in Beijing, added.
Citgo Petroleum Corp, a subsidiary of state-run oil holding Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa), “has been instructed to enhance the cooperation tool,” Chávez told reporters.
Citgo reported sale of 40 million gallons of discounted heating oil to approximately 181,000 homes and hundred underprivileged dwellings in eastern United States, including the states of Massachusetts, New York, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, Delaware and the area of Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, Chavez is signing a deal to ship 500,000 barrels of crude oil a day to China, on the same day this press statement was made. I have worked in the oil business, one barrell is 42 gallons. See the significance of this?

For every action there is a swift and opposite reaction —
Developer Baker in Alabama urges boycott of Venezuela-owned Citgo oil
Retail developer Alex Baker told the Hoover Chamber of Commerce Thursday that his company’s 150 employees no longer will buy Citgo gas products for company vehicles, in response to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s rebuke of President Bush on Wednesday.
Chavez called Bush “the devil” in a speech Wednesday to the United Nations and has said Bush didn’t care about the needs of the poor. Citgo Petroleum Corp. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, and it owns some refineries in the United States.
Baker said he also is asking all contractors and vendors who do business for AIG Baker Shopping Center Properties and three related operating units to boycott Citgo products as well.

A great number of venezuelans, as myself, don’t endorse chavez’ policies and kindly apologize to the american people for his mischiefs.
Chavez is in office after he fraudulently won the 2004 presidential recall, backed by the Carter Center.
Hey Dave! Go to LA Portugal, you’ll never find it. You’re such an ignorant as a chavista.

i know everyone is upset that the CIA didn’t get to put their favorite puppet in as dictator this time, but is that a big enough reason for every flag-waving american to hate this chavez guy? Oh wait, i guess also the thing about gas profits going to other people besides fat-cat republican politicans/businessmen is a good reason too. how dare citgo try to steal that hard-earned blood money from bush and co.

UPDATE: Navy’s Citgo Gas Stations
UPDATE: The Navy has 53 Citgo stations on bases in the U.S.
Now there is a movement to drop those contracts. This from ThePoint.com
In recent years, Chavez has called America a terrorist state and the Count Dracula of the world. He’s appeared on Al-Jazeera TV pleading for allies to bring down American society. He’s pledged solidarity with Iran and he supports Iran’s nuclear program.
Chavez has hinted he would back Iran in a confrontation with the U.S. military. So picture the irony. Our servicemen and women who fill up their cars at Navy bases across America are buying Citgo gas. Citgo is owned by the Venezuelan government. The Navy operates 53 Citgo gas stations nationwide including this one in Annapolis, Maryland. Citgo has annual contracts worth $60 million. The longest is set to expire in the year 2010.
Navy officials point out the original contract was awarded in 1989. That was three years before Chavez launched a coup attempt and ten years before he became President.
That aside, now is time for Navy lawyers to find a way to cancel this contract for good.
And that’s The Point. In Annapolis, Maryland

I believe that taking a business taking a strong political stand is somewhat risky. especially for a politician who is not too popular.
This is not patriotic, it is political.

My respect for 7 Eleven has doubled. I applaud their move. They took the right course of action by dropping Citgo and they put their money where their mouth is. Outstanding.

judge crater, what part of my statement wasn’t truthful? Are you not aware of the CIA’s influence in Venezuela politics? Are you not aware that they have orchestrated coups in the past? This is not conspiracy theory, but truth that is documented. How naive are you?
So yes, please keep cracking jokes. That is much easier than TRUTH.

The Financial Time of London reports that just two OPEC countries are cutting oil production in order to prop up prices. So Hugo Chavez offers heating oil at a cut rate per gallon while he slashes production of oil by 1,000 times the amount.
Nigeria and Venezuela plan to cut production amid OPEC concern about the rapid drop in prices, the OPEC countries say.
The move, which accounts for about 170,000 barrels a day, may suggest other cuts by the oil-producing cartel, The Financial Times reports.
Nigerian Oil Minister and OPEC President Edmund Daukoru has said the price of oil was “very low.”
Nigeria and Venezuela both said their cuts were part of an informal deal worked out at a meeting in September to pare output if prices fell, The New York Times reported.
Oil prices peaked in midsummer at $77.03 a barrel and have fallen nearly 20 percent since then.
Current oil futures rose 15 cents to close at $62.91 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday.

Excellent point Sam. Indians are a very smart, hardworking and socially careing people. How dumb can the people of Cuba and Venezuela be to vote in monsters who end up dictators? Haven’t they learned that Marxisim/Stalinism has failed everywhere?

Oh good lets have even less options to fill up, just to spite Hugo! Now we can give our business to companies that make, record profits of 15 billion dollars off of us every 3 months (100 billion a year) and then get tax breaks by Congress because their profits juuuuuust arent high enough! You idiots the media is playing on your emotions like a fiddle! Hugo is eeeevil he made fun of our president! At least Hugo has some societal programs in which is money goes like free medical care for the indigent populations and food programs for the poor during record food prices! The stupidity is astounding! What do you care if a handful of 90 year old oil tycoon s in Texas gets your billions instead of millions of needy people?
Mick Gregory // May 24, 2008 at 9:33 am |
Average Americans own stock in oil companies. The presidents of the oil companies earn a fraction of what hags like Hillary Clinton, Barbara Striesand and Cher make ever year, let alone “Gansta Rap” artists. You really are an uneducated sad bastard.
