Are any of the presidential candidates honest enough to talk about the 800 lb. gorilla, Marxist dictator in our part of the world? I mean Hugo “The Boss” Chavez, of course.
“I said at the outset that the threat in Latin America is unprecedented. I say that because the Castros have a second tyrant and he has great wealth, from oil. We must stand just as firm against caudillos like Hugo Chavez, tutored by Fidel Castro. Chavez and Castro are brothers in blood, intent on personal gratification at the expense of their people. Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro have stolen the phrase – ‘Patria o muerte, venceremos.’ This phrase should not be used by dictators, but by liberators.
“There are two spheres of influence in the Western Hemisphere. One is dark, bellicose and spreads misery by denying people basic freedoms; the other shines like a powerful light, is peaceful and wants only for its people to live in liberty and prosper.
— Mitt Romney, Republican Presidential Candidate
Front runner, Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani’s law firm lobbies for Citgo Petroleum, which is owned and controlled by the Venezuelan state oil company and President Hugo Chavez, but the firm said on Wednesday that Giuliani had never worked on the account.
Is that all Mr. Giuliani has to say? How about, “I suggested we quit the Citgo account on moral, economic and human rights issues.”
Records filed at the Texas Ethics Commission showed the law firm, Houston-based Bracewell & Giuliani, may have received up to $170,000 from Citgo since 2005.
A spokeswoman for Giuliani’s campaign, which has been buoyed by recent opinion polls showing him leading his Republican rivals, declined to answer questions, but provided an e-mail statement denouncing Chavez. “Mayor Giuliani believes Hugo Chavez is not a friend of the US and his influence continues to grow because of our increasing reliance on foreign sources of oil,” the statement read.
It concluded with a call for developing alternative sources of fuel to replace foreign crude oil. Venezuela is the fourth-biggest oil supplier to the US. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, joined the law firm in 2005. The firm said its relationship with Citgo predated the hiring of Giuliani and he had never worked on the account.
“Rudy Giuliani has never had any involvement in this representation (of Citgo),” the firm said. “Our efforts on behalf of Citgo do not involve the company’s political profile in the US or elsewhere.”
Citgo spokesman David McCollum said: “I’m sure the former mayor of New York was not even aware his firm represented Citgo before the story came out.” He said Bracewell and Giuliani represented Citgo in dealings with the Texas legislature and state agencies.
Citgo’s image among US conservatives, who make up the core of Republican voters, has been dented by Chavez’s verbal attacks on Bush, whom he has called “the devil.” Last year the conservative group American Family Association called for a boycott of Citgo and 7-Eleven dropped Citgo as a petrol supplier, citing in part Chavez’s anti-US rhetoric.
There are lawsuits and criminal indictments building up on Citgo operations along the lines of price fixing, oil trade manipulation and EPA criminal violations.
That may be too much potential cash flow for Guliani to turn down. But if the man is a true leader, he will do what 7-Eleven did and cancel the Citgo deal.
Hugo Chavez is credited with reviving the OPEC cartel. Oil was approximately $12 a barrel when he took office in 1999. Today it is $57.50 a barrel after a high of $75+ last year.
Then, he uses Joe Kennedy to shill his “discounted oil for Democrats” as a public service promotion. What a pathetic voting block. He is actually buying votes for America’s socialists who hide behind the political party brand name Democratic Party. Chavez is a member of OPEC and continues to lobby for reduced oil production to keep the price of oil over $60 per barrel.
Is the New York Times, Washington Post or Houston Chronicle following up on this Marxist?
“The Boss” Chavez mentioned his friendship with “Carlos The Jackal” in front of his captive audience of OPEC oil ministers at the meeting in Caracas Venezuela last June.
You may remember that Carlos was behind a hit that resulted in the deaths of OPEC staff, but his plan was foiled, he wanted to kill several oil ministers.
Chavez is like a strange James Bond comic character. Yet, his company CITGO continues to operate in the United States and even trade oil futures from it’s Houston headquarters, where the Fifth floor PDVSA and Citgo executives work in a palace with bullet proof glass on a campus protected by tank-proof fencing and grassy knoll. Citgo’s trading room requires an iris scan to enter.
Are you OK with that, candidates?

Hi Mick,
My guess is that most of the legion of candidates are hoping someone offs Chavez by the end of the year. Given the number of enemies he is racking up, this is not that bad a bet.

Then not that hard to speak up like Mitt Romney did. Wouldn’t you agree?

Castro has been around for 50 years (that scum) and nobody has wacked him, yet. This guy Chavez plays well to a lot of US citizens which is scary. We cant allow an axis of communism in south america like the one thats being sat up day by day while certain so called leaders look the other way.
If the republicans run a weird fraud like Giuliani then they may as well kiss the election goodbye right now, after all those cross dressing pictures leaked out, whether he was joking around or not it doesnt look good, it makes John Kerry look like John Wayne. The man is all about the bottom line, get him off the stage before he wrecks everything. Maybe thats what they want, maybe they want to throw the thing like the Demos did in 2004.
I just want to see America protected and free from foreign influence.
Just my 2 cents.

You are worrying me. Would you vote for the Big Sis/Big Bro ticket, Hillary/Oboma?
blackiejones // March 21, 2007 at 12:17 pm |
Absolutely not! Never! I like Obama and his persona of truth and openness he is inspiring in many ways but that doesnt mean I’ll vote for him. Hillary is what she is and never gets my vote along with millions of people just like me. The Democrats walked away from me a long time ago.
I know a lot of people on the right don’t like John McCain but I think he’s probably the best bet if they plan to win and he knows whats up. If you plan on losing run Rudy or Romney. Rudy wont win because he’s only been the mayor of New York and that doesnt qualify him for anything except a gold watch and a pat on the back in my book. If you stick Romney out there watch for a moral majority backlash because I’m pretty sure those folks view his choice in religion a little differently than he does. I’d like to see a combo like McCain/Gingrich.
In a perfect world I would vote for Al Haig in a heartbeat, he was in charge for about 5 minutes one time you know, I was never more pleased in all my life, history has made him out be a jackass which couldnt be any further from the truth.

Hi Mick,
The real candidates haven’t entered the race yet. The ones that are already running, are worried about the final lap, and won’t say anything that may in the least way upset anyone. Except for Hillary, of course, and she figures the nomination is due her, which, combined with the high mortality rate of liberal non-Clinton supporters, assures her of the final slot.

I’d like to hear what Hillary/Obama have to say about Chavez. It must be a dilema for them. They are close ‘brothers and sisters’ to the socialist plan.

How about you report the truth? Instead of financier dictated dribble. It happens that Venezuela is a DEMOCRATIC country. That does not seem to matter any more, somehow he is still a communist??? It is apparant these days that anyone who is against Global Finance is a bully, when really it is the other way around. Fascists

And look at the US Ecomony! Its predicted that 2000000 forclosures may happen over the next few years. However Wall Street keeps on going higher?
Thats because you guys measure money which has no real instrinsic value. Keeping People in there home matters. The average person struggles while your all betting in the worlds biggest casino.
Fascists!

Venezuela is in NO WAY a Democracy!!! Just ask anyone who lives there how ‘democratic’ their country is. Chavez has been a sheep in wolve’s clothing since his election in 1992. He planned his autocoup in 1999, and has ridden the wave of delirium since then. He is a real danger to the world. Hve you read his “Ley Habilitante” which he has decreed and added to their Constitution? In those laws, you can see his ‘democracy’ really shine through!

Amigo, I have many, many friends from Venezuela and Colombia. They are highly educated and sophisticated people with a good work ethic and values. They live in mini mansions and drive new luxury cars in the U.S. now. They are so smart they left their countries to the socialist sheeple like you. Hugo Chavez is using you while he sends billions of Euros to his Swiss bank account and takes over more big businesses.
