US journalists could become offshore outsource helpdesk employees for India and UK firms

As the  industry piles on more losses and fires back with cut-backs, there are many former food writers, columnists and sports reporters fleeing. Jim Romenesko at Poynter.org has started getting stories on the entry-level pay and veteren salaries from journalists in America. These letters will serve as a warning for students contemplating a newspaper career.

This is your salvation, newspaper employees who want to get out and have a reasonably happy lifestyle. With salaries of $16,000 to $20,000 a year, a good grasp of English, some basic computer awareness, and the magic of the Web, you could take jobs back from India in the area. Work at a helpdesk and make $30,000 or more here in the USA. Imade my great escape a few years ago from a major league paper where I had worked for more than 15 years.  I’m in I.T. now and am working just nine-hour days, Monday through Friday. In my spare time,I blog about  new and old media on my new MacBook at Starbucks. What stories do you have of old and new media? This is an historic time we are experiencing.

  1. I agree. These are historic times, and many news agencies don’t seem to know how to deal with the changes. They seem to offer more in the way of their predictable spin as entertainment than actual news.

  2. Thanks for your comment Damian. There is a great irony in that this is one of the biggest stories in media evolution and the newspaper journailsits are slow to figure it out.

  3. That would be like admitting to a drinking problem. They seem to think that ignoring the media shift will make it go away, rather than embrace the opportunities it’s providing.

In essence they are becoming a story, and they way the approach reporting is becoming irrelevant.

  4. Well put Damian. They can’t really embrace the idea that citizen journalists are able to write and report on subjects just as well and even more so regarding controversial subjects than the “holy editoriali.” The denial comes from a comfortable arrogance, from the market monopolies they enjoyed for so long for finacial support and a “smarter than thou” attitude.
