The New York TImes had a reporter rewrite an AP story on the hoax and they spun the story to blame FOX News first with the hoax. This is called journalism?
MSNBC was the victim of a hoax when it reported that an adviser to John McCain had identified himself as the source of an embarrassing story about former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the network said Wednesday.
David Shuster, an anchor for the cable news network, said on air Monday that Martin Eisenstadt, “a McCain policy adviser,” had come forth and identified himself as the source of a story saying Palin had mistakenly believed Africa was a country instead of a continent.
Eisenstadt identifies himself on a blog as a senior fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy and “a contributor to FOX News.” Yet neither he nor the institute exist; each is part of a hoax dreamed up by a filmmaker named Eitan Gorlin and his partner, Dan Mirvish, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
The Eisenstadt claim had mistakenly been delivered to Shuster by a producer and was used in a political discussion Monday afternoon, MSNBC said.
“The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air,” said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman. “We recognized the error almost immediately and ran a correction on air within minutes.”
Gaines told the Times that someone in the network’s newsroom had presumed the information solid because it was passed along in an e-mail from a colleague.
The hoax was limited to the identity of the source in the story about Palin—not the Fox News story itself. While Palin has denied that she mistook Africa for a country, the veracity of that report was not put in question by the revelation that Eisenstadt is a phony.
Eisenstadt’s “work” had been quoted and debunked before. The Huffington Post said it had cited Eisenstadt in July on a story regarding the Hilton family and McCain.
Among the other victims were political blogs for the Los Angeles Times and The New Republic, each of which referenced false material from Eisenstadt’s blog.
“The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air,” said Jeremy Gaines, MSNBC spokesman.
There are plenty of questions that are not asked.
How did Minnesota Democrat Party election officials come up with 500 more votes for the Democrat senate candidate days after the polls closed and none for the Republican candidate?
Why was there a crisis over $150,000 spent on Sarah Palin’s campaign clothing, but no comparison with Hillary’s warehouse of pantsuits or Obama’s Greek columns and semi-truck of suits?

Can you help track down this hoax. It seems to have been around for weeks. Was MSNBC the first to fall for it?
This is one of the most elaborate, funniest hoaxes in a long time, right up there with Piltdown Man and Samuel J. Wurzelbacher.
It appears the LA Times and The New Republic among the MSM, along with numerous bloggers on both sides of the spectrum, were all taken in by this non-existent McCain adviser, his phony consulting firm and his made-up think tank.
The perpetrators are obviously brilliant, making their made-up stories just a tiny bit less ridiculous than the real ones we read in the media every day. What a hoot!
Gov. Palin seems to be a bright, articulate woman. The leftist media has pilloried her unmercifully, yet she has stood strong. The fact remains that at this point she still has more governing experience than McCain, Biden, or The One. In four years, should she remain governor, she will have even more.
If The One was good enough to become President-elect, with less than 150 days in the U.S. Senate, surley some of you haters can cut her some slack in four years, should she decide to run.

I think Palin will have strong bipartisan support in 2012. At least half of Republicans will support her. Every Democrat I know also wants her to be the GOP nominee.

In all honesty, I am all for Obama’s success as president, just as much if not more than you.
After all, I not only voted for Obama in the primary, I also campaigned for him in the Texas caucuses.
All the fear tactics used by the Republicans fell pretty flat. So what if one or two Supreme Court Justices retire? They will be Ruth Genzberg and David Suitor (?) who are about as left wing as an American can be.
Obama has the intelligence and now the political clout to make some changes to the political matrix. I don’t think he will let Pelosi ruin his chance to be a good president.
Mick, my friend, I do believe you are serious. Let me give you a shock — I split my ticket this year between Obama and our moderate Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander, who has always been a smart and dedicated public man who chooses his issues carefully and is not afraid to set aside partisanship when it is required.
Let me tell you something else that may surprise you. I hope the GOP can recover from the national whooping it took in the 2008 election and once again be a competitive, moderating influence on our politics.
The wreckage for the Republicans is pretty bad right now. There is not a single GOP congressman in New England and just a handful in the Upper Midwest and the West Coast. The party lost seats in the Mid-Atlantic states and in the Mountain West. In Congress, as in the presidential race, Republicans are in danger of becoming a party confined to the Deep South and the Great Plains states.
The presidential election map looks even worse. Not only did the party lose nine states that were in Bush’s column in 2004 but it lost strength almost everywhere else. If you look at a map of congressional districts where Republicans gained and lost strength, the only region where the map is red is Appalachia, stretching from West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas and a few other Southern states. The rest of the country is blue, meaning Democrats gained strength.
Demographically the story isn’t much better. Obama narrowly won the white vote and convincingly won college-educated whites. He obviously did well among the African-American population and defeated McCain by more than 2-1 among Hispanics. These last two, coincidentally, are the fastest-growing demographic groups in the country.
My career in politics was among conservative Tennessee Democrats. Many times we have parted company with the national Democrats when they overreached. We don’t chase the extremes on either side and we tend to reject the hyperpartisanship that has become the trademark of both national parties. We are very patriotic and want practical, common sense solutions to our problems that will help the United States succeed. Above all, we have a history of setting partisanship aside and working together for the benefit of our state.
And in that spirit, I sincerely want national Republicans to return to being a competive force that holds Democrats accountable, prevents them from going overboard and offers intelligent alternatives to those proposed by Democrats. As has been said many times, the eagle cannot fly with just a left wing or right wing. It needs two healthy wings — and sometimes I think an extra wing or two wouldn’t be so bad.
In electing Obama, I think Americans were embracing a change from the extreme policies, the failures and the overreaching of Bush’s Republicans. Obama tapped into that spirit early in the campaign and seldom deviated. I do not believe he wants to replace failed extremism from the right with similar extremism from the left. After having read his books, examined his speeches and watched his campaign, I think he will be much more of a centrist than many people realize.
Far be it from me to offer advise to the loyal opposition, but it seems to me that Republicans would do well to tack toward the center as well if they want to find their way out of the wilderness. It is in the center that elections are won and lost, as John McCain will attest. While some conservatives insist McCain lost because he was too moderate, in fact the opposite is true.
The moderate McCain was AWOL during the campaign. Recognizing that he had only a tenuous grip on the conservative base, he was forced to steer a course to the hard right, including his pick of Sarah Palin. He won back the base but lost the center as moderate voters deserted his campaign, seeing him as a clone of Bush and the policies they had already overwhelmingly rejected judging from Bush’s approval ratings.
To reinvigorate the party, I think Republicans need to be cautious of those voices who want them to steer an even harder right course. They need to drop the fear and smear campaigns, the demonization of opponents and reject the divisive tactics that have left Americans fearful of each other, unable to work together at home and less respected abroad. In short, we need to recognize that the things that unite us as Americans are deeper and much more important than our disagreements. We need to start acting like our parents’ generation of Americans again.
Judging from what I’ve seen in the conservative post-mortems following the election, I’m not hopeful the moderates will prevail in the short term. It may take a few more tail-kickings or hubris on the part of Democrats to bring them around. But if Republicans are to return to a competitive electoral position and give Americans a realistic choice, it will have to happen soon. From my perspective, the sooner the better.

Lamar Alexander is an honest, smart Senator. I had a talk with him 10 years ago. He was very good for education reform in Tenn.
